Enteric Bacteria in Aquatic Ecosystems

چکیده
were prepared from two enteric bacterial species, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis. Counts of CFU of NSB and RSB and total numbers of RSB and FLB were monitored over time, both in the presence and in the absence of natural microbiota. In the presence of natural microbiota, no differences were observed between CFU counts of NSB and RSB, but RSB total numbers were 1 to 4 orders of magnitude higher than CFU numbers. Therefore, the use of standard bacteriological media causes an important underestimation of the total number of enteric bacteria. In the absence of natural microbiota, the total numbers of NSB, RSB, and FLB remained constant over time. These results showed that RSB are a reliable indicator of the decay in both the total number and the CFU of enteric bacteria in natural water samples. By using RSB, enteric bacteria were classified as culturable cells, nonculturable cells (or somnicells), and dead cells in the presence of natural microbiota. In the presence of natural microbiota, differences between RSB and FLB direct counts were detected for E. coli, but not for E. faecalis. These differences were explained by size-selective grazing. Thus, protistan grazing was found to be the main cause of the decrease in total numbers of enteric bacteria in our experiments.

Biogeochemical cycling of lignocellulosic carbon in marine and freshwater ecosystems: Relative contributions of procaryotes and eucaryotes’
The relative contributions of procaryotes and eucaryotes to the degradation of the lignin and polysaccharide components of lignocellulosic detritus in two marine and two freshwater wetland ecosystems were determined. Two independent methods-physical separation of bacteria from fungi and other eucaryotes by size fractionation, and antibiotic treatments-were used to estimate procaryotic and eucar...
متن کاملInterspecific interactions drive chitin and cellulose degradation by aquatic microorganisms
Complex biopolymers (BPs) such as chitin and cellulose provide the majority of organic carbon in aquatic ecosystems, but the mechanisms by which communities of bacteria in natural systems exploit them are unclear. Previous degradation experiments in artificial systems predominantly used microcosms containing a single bacterial species, neglecting effects of interspecific interactions. By constr...
متن کاملAntibiotic resistance conferred by conjugative plasmid in Escherichia coli isolated from community ponds of Kathmandu Valley.
Bacteria can develop a variety of cellular mechanisms for acquiring resistance against antibiotics, including genetic mechanisms. Both commensal and pathogenic bacteria become resistant to every new antibiotic within few years of introduction. In recent years, antibioticresistant bacteria are being widely spread in nature. This can be due to the irrational use of sub-lethal concentrations of an...
متن کاملThe Occurrence of Salmonella in Various Marine Environments in Turkey
The occurrence and survival of enteric bacteria in marine ecosystems has been of interest to microbial ecology, sustainable usage of aquatic products, and the health of humans and the ecosystem (Barcina et al., 1986; Borrego and Figueras, 1997; Dionisio et al., 2000). Therefore, it is interesting to know and evaluate environmental factors that influence the occurrence of indicator bacteria and ...
متن کاملNitrous oxide emission by aquatic macrofauna.
A large variety of aquatic animals was found to emit the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide when nitrate was present in the environment. The emission was ascribed to denitrification by ingested bacteria in the anoxic animal gut, and the exceptionally high N(2)O-to-N(2) production ratio suggested delayed induction of the last step of denitrification. Filter- and deposit-feeding animal species s...
